The latest of the complete Mozart cycles is that from Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert, which reached the Prague in 1993. Unfortunately this most musically finds little to say here, and his perfomance, while admirably clean, swift and clear, is ultimately a bit of a lightweight. The same could not be said for the version by the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto under Peter Maag, recorded in 1996, which is a "big" perfomance in all the best ways. From the very first bars of the introduction this is a reading of theatrical power, with strong contrasts, grand climaxes and a stirring orchestral sound (no one else encourages such uninhibited contributions from the horns). Carefully shaped in every bar and full to the brim with interpretative ideas, at the same time it never sounds fussy or overweight.(…)

.... Incantano e insieme inquietano le battute iniziali della Sinfonia n.40, non solo pulsazione ritmica, ma palpito dinamico, crescendo e immediatamente diminuendo. Movimento che rapisce. Poi i tempi dilatati non tanto nella durata effettiva, quanto in una lunghezza meditativa: in qualche modo Maag si sofferma su ogni nota, guardandola passare, accadere, avvenire....
... Un elogio, infine all'orchestra tutta, orgogliosamente "italiana" nell'affrontare un autore tedesco che proprio all'Italia guardò molto.

....un'impaginazione intelligente della sequenza dei tre titoli, ovvero un amore per Mozart seguito attraverso la sua strada. Una buona direzione, una collana ormai collaudata e fortunata. Che con Arts e Peter Maag e l'Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto ha dato alla discografia indipendente una delle sue migliori iniziative e realizzazioni artistiche altrettanto di qualità.
